Understanding Homelessness in Anchorage: A National and Local Perspective
In 2023, homelessness across the U.S. reached record levels, with more than 653,000 people experiencing homelessness on a single night in January. This represents a 12.1% increase from the previous year, highlighting the urgent need for more resources and systemic solutions. Affordable housing remains one of the largest challenges nationwide, with rising rent and housing costs forcing more individuals and families into homelessness.
At the same time, Anchorage is seeing a different trend. Homelessness in our city has decreased for eight consecutive months and now remains under 3,000 people—significantly lower than national rates. While our local response system has been effective, we’re still facing challenges like high housing costs and an increase in veteran homelessness.
Let’s take a closer look at how the homelessness crisis in Anchorage compares to the national trends:
National State of Homelessness
Response Systems Are Working, But Need More Support
The national homeless response system continues to expand, adding more beds and serving more people each year. However, more resources are needed to keep pace with the growing affordable housing crisis.Record High Homeless Counts

Housing costs are becoming unmanageable for many. The number of renter households paying more than 50% of their income on rent has increased by 12.6% since 2015, disproportionately affecting minority groups.Backward Movement in Targeted Homelessness Programs
Veterans and chronically homeless individuals are experiencing rising homelessness rates again, after years of targeted declines.
