For every 100 Alaska families with an extremely low income, there are 36 affordable AND available rental homes. In other Western states, plus Texas and Florida, things are even worse.
A new national report underscores the magnitude of need we recently witnessed when more than 1,300 Anchorage households applied for emergency rental assistance. The funds in hand could cover only about 20.

"There are really three barriers to going to shelter: possessions, pets, and people."
— Meg Zaletel, executive director, Anchorage Coalition to End Homelessness
Anchorage is doing better on the people front, with shelters providing ways for families and couples to stay together. We are doing better with pets, too, though more options are needed, Meg says.
Possessions present the real dilemma. Because to go into a shelter, a person generally must fit all they have into two totes or leave it behind.
Listen to Meg's insights on the two-tote problem and the system as a whole presented at last week's Summit on Anchorage's Coordinated Response to Homelessness: https://www.youtube.com/live/n9o1CzWDKVc?si=oixSehF7EG2pFdgs&t=2520

Our housing emergency
Soaring rents, stagnant wages and limited affordable housing means many of our Anchorage neighbors can't afford even the most basic place to live. A recent rental assistance opportunity revealed that more than 1,000 Anchorage households are at risk of losing their housing.
As a community, let's come together to support the proven answers of rental and rapid rehousing assistance.

Our street outreach team has gotten extra help this winter through AmeriCorps. The team is connecting with those who are unsheltered, providing essential supplies, and doing Coordinated Entry assessments that make sure those with the highest needs are prioritized for shelter and housing. With an estimated 500 people living outdoors as we head into spring, strong outreach is essential.
