Current state of homelessness in Anchorage

Why did Anchorage see an increase in the number of people experiencing homelessness in October?

Three reasons.

One, people got back in touch with the system. Some had found a place to stay, but it didn’t last. Others just weren’t engaged for the past 90 days.

Two, fewer people are flowing out of homelessness services to housing. That’s because housing programs are largely full, so there is no place for people to go.

And three, almost 300 people who never experienced homelessness contacted the system for the first time.
