A community furniture bank

Sylvia Akers, Shiloh’s community service coordinator, says the community’s first furniture bank will provide a free shopping experience for anyone in need.

Do you have extra furniture taking up space? Consider a donation to Shiloh Community Housing. The organization has stepped up to open Anchorage’s first furniture bank.

“Shiloh aims to collect, inspect, and provide this furniture free of charge to those in need,” the organization says.

Shiloh is preparing for the anticipated grand opening of their furniture bank in July. The furniture bank will provide a free shopping experience for anyone in need of furniture and household items. There are no eligibility requirements or restrictions, and the furniture bank will be open to all members of the community. Shiloh hopes the community members served will include those who have experienced homelessness.

Donations are already rolling in, including couches and bureaus provided by Clarion Suites. Sylvia Akers, Shiloh’s community service coordinator, says the furniture bank is now accepting gently used furniture. However, Shiloh does not accept broken, chipped, stained, incomplete, unusable or recalled items. Additionally, they do not accept food, clothing, toys, books, exercise equipment, and various other goods.

Shiloh’s complete guidelines for donations are here. Email photos to furniturebank@shilohhousing.org for donation pre-approval.

Along with furniture donations, Shiloh is looking for volunteers who have trucks or other large vehicles. They need your help to pick up and transport donated items from homes to the furniture bank. If you have a truck or van and are willing to lend a hand, email Shiloh at furniturebank@shilohhousing.org to learn about volunteer opportunities.
